For many professionals, especially women, thinking of others first has become a well-practiced habit. And in some instances, it makes sense: health and safety of another person might need to come before leisure, a work deadline may need to be prioritized over a night out, or spending time with a loved one whose time is limited may take precedence over extra time at work.
Yet, if we have not cared and considered ourselves in the big picture of life, our lives can feel unbalanced, and heavy on the side of others. It is time to recalibrate!
Simply ask yourself:
How do I feel about this? If I did not have to worry about how others would feel about this, what decision would I make?
Will I resent others for passing this opportunity up? Will my anger brew over time?
Can I figure out a way to do both, so I don't feel like I am always neglecting what I want?
